Three+ Thoughts from Me:

  • While some of the men in the room threw down their pipes and quit their use of tobacco immediately on hearing the D&C 89 revelation, for others, it wasn’t quite that easy. Leonard Arrington, a church historian, wrote that Brigham Young began to chew tobacco as a young man, especially when his teeth hurt him. By the time Brigham arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, even into the 1850s, he kept a plug of chewing tobacco with him, just in case he was in pain. Sometimes he would take out the tobacco and say to it, “Who’s going to be the master?”. Usually, he would then put it back in his pocket, but there were times when the pain was so intense, he would resort to it once more. (From the podcast, Sunday on Monday, Deseret Book)

  • This story doesn’t justify the use of tobacco, but it comforts me to know that even Brigham, a prophet, had personal struggles with consistent health habits. “Who’s going to be the master?” may be used the next time ice cream and chocolate cake are calling my name! At the very least, the question can remind me to give myself grace as I try, try again to do what is good for my body and my spirit.

  • When do you see the promises of D&C 89 fulfilled? When do you find wisdom and treasures? When can you run and not be weary or walk and not faint? Those are the times and conditions you want to replicate often.

  • What I Learned about Christ: He cares about my whole well-being, and following His principles produces magnificent results.

Two Thoughts from Others:

  • “The Word of Wisdom does not promise you perfect health, but it teaches how to keep the body you were born with in the best condition and your mind alert to delicate spiritual promptings.”  –President Boyd K. Packer

  • “Fall down seven times, get up eight.”  –Japanese Proverb

One Question for You:

  • How are you blessed by following the Word of Wisdom?
