Finding Peace — D&C 88
Come, Follow Me: Doctrine and Covenants 2025
(August 11–17)
Three+ Thoughts from Me
“And all things shall be in commotion; and surely, men’s hearts shall fail them; for fear shall come upon all people” (D&C 88:91). As this verse describes our day, the rest of the verses give tender messages on how to find peace amid this commotion. Joseph Smith titled D&C 88, “the olive leaf…plucked from the Tree of Paradise, the Lord’s message of peace to us” (Section Heading). Two messages resonated with me–light cleaveth unto light (D&C 88:40) and establish a house of order (D&C 88:119).
I love light. When I built my house, I spent most of my money on windows. In the summer, I love getting up with the sunrise and going to bed with the sunset. In the winter, I go to places with more sun. But I can do better in moving away from darkness and toward light, especially in the daily media I read and watch. In his talk, Spiritual Treasures, President Nelson asks us to “examine your life meticulously and regularly,” and to find what is “no longer needful, what is no longer worthy of your time and energy.” “Does this bring me light?” is the perfect criterion for making these decisions.
Strange as it seems, an antidote to a crazy world can be as simple as an organized linen closet or a utensil drawer! Order within our control brings peace when there is so much confusion and disorder out of our control. So, Deseret Industries here I come with my boxes as I work to simplify and find more order inside and out.
What I Learned about Christ: He knows we are living in a time of commotion and has given us many ways of finding peace, especially in D&C 88.
Two Thoughts from Others
“As you shift your focus away from worldly distractions, some things that seem important to you now will recede in priority. You will need to say no to some things, even though they may seem harmless. As you embark upon and continue this lifelong process of consecrating your life to the Lord, the changes in your perspective, feelings, and spiritual strength will amaze you!” -President Russell M. Nelson
“As evil increases in the world, there is a compensatory spiritual power for the righteous. As the world slides from its spiritual moorings, the Lord prepares the way for those who seek Him, offering them greater assurance, greater confirmation, and greater confidence in the spiritual direction they are traveling. The gift of the Holy Ghost becomes a brighter light in the emerging twilight.” -Elder Neil L. Anderson
