My Thoughts
Two art drawings are on my refrigerator beside two precious poems, created and gifted to me by my young nieces for Christmas. The desire to create is obvious in children–they use their imagination and whatever is around them to make. Whether it be simple drawings, blanket forts, lawn games, or silly jokes–creating is part of who they are and the joy they feel.
The desire to create doesn’t go away as we grow older. But it is easily dampened down with seemingly higher priorities or by a narrowing of the definition that requires a canvas, brushes, or the keys of a piano. The flame of creativity can also be extinguished with the voice of critics–outside and inside.
We are sons and daughters of the most creative Being in the universe. The desire to create is in our DNA, and creating something that did not exist before fills a place in our soul that nothing else can. It’s practice for Godhood.
Expand your definition of create and start small. Add a new spice to familiar food or discover a new food with old spice. Rearrange the furniture, organize a drawer, write a note of gratitude, or make a list of favorites.
Most importantly, embrace imperfection–it’s proof you’re trying. Whatever you create, our loving Heavenly parents will post it on the refrigerator, beside Their picture of you, and say, “We love it. It is good. Keep making.”
Thoughts from Others
“If you’re alive, you’re a creative person.” –Elizabeth Gilbert
“The more you trust and rely upon the Spirit, the greater your capacity to create. That is your opportunity in this life and your destiny in the life to come. Sisters, trust and rely upon the Spirit. As you take the normal opportunities of your daily life and create something of beauty and helpfulness, you improve not only the world around you but also the world within you.” –President Dieter F. Uchtdorf
