Follow the Cairns — D&C 41–44

Come, Follow Me: Doctrine and Covenants 2025

Three Thoughts from Me:

  • If you’re a hiker, you’ve most likely encountered a cairn. It’s a stack of rocks that indicate you’re on the right path. Cairns are especially helpful when the path is obstructed with curves, overgrown foliage or false deer paths that can easily lead to being lost. A surge of confidence comes when you see the first cairn on the trail because you know that by following these important markers you will arrive at your destination.

  • I have a distance to go before I can “imagine the comfort of having confidence in the presence of God” as President Nelson invited us to do in the April General Conference. But I take comfort in reaching divine cairns when the Comforter whispers, “You’re where you need to be. You’re on the right path.” These moments have occurred most often for me in Sacrament meetings or when I’m driving home from time in the temple.

  • At times, there can be a significant distance between cairns and it’s easy to feel lost or off course. This is when God requires us to use “the prayer of faith” (D&C 42:14), “praying with confidence that Heavenly Father hears us, that He understands our needs better than we do” (President Russell M. Nelson) and that the cairn will appear as we continue to keep our covenants.

Two Thoughts from Others:

  • “The Holy Ghost makes an ideal traveling companion” (Larry R. Lawrence).

  • “My invitation to the anxious Primary child I mentioned earlier, and to each of you, is to follow Jesus Christ and to trust the Holy Ghost as you would a cherished friend” (Elder Dale G. Renlund).

One Question for You”

  • Where do you see your divine cairns and feel you’re on the right path?
