Walk with Him: Trust the Five Finger Promises
Genesis 24-33, Follow Me: Old Testament 2026
(March 2–8)
Three Thoughts from Me
My career has been helping people when their lives hit rock bottom. Grief, depression, abuse, mental illness, addictions, suicide, divorce–the very worst trials imaginable. I’ve seen that in every hard place, an opening appears for change, an opportunity to let go of what was, and consider what could be. This vulnerability doesn’t come any other way. The gift of pain is the potential for change.
Jacob was in this place as he laid his head on a stack of stones, the hardest of surfaces, after running for his life and leaving all that he loved (Genesis 28:11). But that night, he learned that while hard places are lonely, he was not alone. Angels were around him, ascending and descending. Being with him when he climbed toward heaven and when he fell down.
Best of all, the Lord stood beside Jacob and gave him five promises (President Emily Belle Freeman calls them the “five-finger promises”):
I am with you.
I will keep you safe.
I will bring you home again.
I will not leave you.
I will keep my promise to you.
These promises are ours. Remembering them daily builds trust and hope and deepens our relationship with Christ.
Two Quotes from Others
“His is a mission of condescension. Jesus Christ will meet us where we are as we are. This is the why of the garden, the cross, and the tomb. The Savior was sent to help us overcome. But staying where we are won’t bring the deliverance we seek. Just as He didn’t leave Jacob there in the dirt, the Lord doesn’t intend to leave any of us where we are.” –President Emily Belle Freeman
“His is also a mission of ascension. He will work within us to lift us up to where He is and, in the process, enable us to become as He is. Jesus Christ came to lift us. He wants to help us become. This is the why of the temple.” –President Emily Belle Freeman
One Thing to Do
Memorize the five-finger promises.
