Three Thoughts from Me:
Dear President Oaks,
As long as we’re making changes here in the next few weeks, could we make one more? Could we add a hymn each week where we stand and sing our hearts out, praising Him? Maybe it could include a guitar, or a tambourine? With reverence, we could be joyful and excited to be in a community that loves God and expresses thanksgiving with hymns of praise. Surely, some of the new hymns would lend themselves to this format. And if we did it as a closing song, people would be energized to get to Sunday School on time! Thank you for your consideration
Love, Sister Terri Anne Flint, Ward Sunday School President
“The book of Psalms is the Bible’s songbook–a collection of prayers, praises, and honest cries from people seeking God in every circumstance.” (Shannon Foster). “Psalm” comes from the Greek word “psalmos,” which means “a song sung to the accompaniment of a stringed instrument.” (Hence, the request for a guitar!) Psalms was the people’s book, a book familiar to many, and was originally sung, prayed, and spoken out loud. It is the book most quoted in all Scripture and was frequently quoted by Jesus.(Elder Dean M. Davies)
The authors of Psalms show us how to praise God. “But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter of mine head. (Psalms 3:3).” “O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! Who has set thy glory above the heavens (Psalms 8:1).” Whether it be by song, poem, dance, art, prayer, or any form of worship, taking time to intentionally praise Him is a good habit.
Two Quotes from Others
“When we worship God, we approach Him with reverent love, humility, and adoration. We acknowledge and accept Him as our sovereign King, the Creator of the universe, our beloved and infinitely loving Father.
We respect and revere Him. We submit ourselves to Him. We lift our hearts in mighty prayer, cherish His word, rejoice in His grace, and commit to follow Him with dedicated loyalty.” (Elder Dean M. Davies)
“Sacred music has a unique capacity to communicate our feelings of love for the Lord. This kind of communication is a wonderful aid to our worship. Many have difficulty expressing worshipful feelings in words, but all can join in communicating such feelings through the inspired words of our hymns.” (President Dallin H. Oaks)
