Be a Son Follower — D&C 49-50

Come, Follow Me: Doctrine and Covenants 2025
(May 19-May 25)

Sunflowers in nature with rays of sun in the background.

Three Thoughts from Me

  • Did you know sunflowers follow the sun? (Oh, that’s why they have that name!) Young sunflowers face east in the morning, gradually turning westward as the sun moves across the sky and then turning back east at night in anticipation of sunrise. This movement is a natural response to maximize sunlight exposure, especially during their budding stage, and it helps them optimize growth and attract pollinators (AI-assisted).

  • We are Son Followers, too. Inherently, we need “the Light of the world” (John 8:12) to grow and develop during our budding season on earth. This Light can be seen, felt, even tasted (Alma 32:35-36). When we’re following this Light, we are edified, strengthened, and truth is illuminated for us to see in darkness. Just as the sunflower maximizes sunlight exposure, “he that continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day” (D&C 50:24).

  • Repentance can mean “return to the light.” Isn’t this what President Nelson meant when he encouraged us to repent daily? Each night we can turn back east in anticipation of a new day sunrise with the promise of being just a little better as we follow the Son.

Two Thoughts from Others

  • “Nothing is more liberating, more ennobling, or more crucial to our individual progression than is a regular, daily focus on repentance. Repentance is not an event; it is a process. It is the key to happiness and peace of mind. When coupled with faith, repentance opens our access to the power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.” –President Russell M. Nelson

  • “Scriptures are like packets of light that illuminate our minds and give place to guidance and inspiration from on high. They can become the key to open the channel to communion with our Father in Heaven and His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ,” –Elder Richard C. Scott

One Thought for You

  • How do you receive God’s light in your life and use it to “chase darkness” away? (from the Come, Follow Me manual).
